A fun filled, educational and team bonding session
What a successful adventure! On the 10th of July, our scout troop traded their usual training grounds for the open road and the beautiful coastline of Uswetakeyyawa beach. This wasn’t just a day trip—it was a dynamic blend of physical challenge, environmental education, and essential bushcraft.
The morning kicked off with so much energy as the scouts cycled from the school all the way to the beach. This journey was a fantastic way to build stamina and teamwork right from the start.
Upon arrival at the beach, the activities shifted into high gear. The scouts immediately got hands-on with pioneering challenges, utilizing knots and lashings to practice their construction skills. But the real highlight for many was the immersive Marine Life session. We were privileged to host a Marine Biologist who guided the scouts through the delicate ecosystem of the beach, teaching them about local marine life and the importance of environmental conservation. It was an eye-opening look at the world beneath the waves right at our feet.
Fueling a day of hard work requires great food, and lunch was another crucial teaching moment. While a hearty meal was prepared using traditional pots, the scouts also learned a vital survival skill: cooking without equipment. They were taught how to construct a reliable, sheltered fire pit—a technique crucial for making simple flatbread (rotti) against the strong coastal winds. It was a practical lesson in resourcefulness and overcoming environmental obstacles.
The day was a perfect demonstration of the scouting spirit: embracing physical challenges, committing to environmental stewardship, and mastering practical skills. Every scout returned home with stronger legs, new knowledge, and memories of a truly successful seaside expedition!
